Simple hacks can take your furniture from bog standard to bloody impressive. Take a little time this weekend to create an awesome arcade console coffee table, minimal floating desk, or one of the other many awesome DIY furniture upgrades you can perform on the cheap.
Workspace
Some of the best furniture hacks happen in your (home) office, whether they’re just practical or a lot of fun. If you have a small space, one of the coolest ways to use the little area you have is to create a floating desk. You can easily accomplish this by installing an IKEA laptop desk onto your wall. Wall-mounted workspaces allow you flexibility of placement (at least initially) so you can create a sitting or standing desk — whichever you prefer.
If you want to build a “conventional” standing desk, there are several ways to do it. Again, IKEA is your friend here; we’ve rounded up a host of IKEA standing desk projects.
Living Room
Let’s not waste any time and get straight to the most important hack for any living room: the classic arcade coffee table. Who doesn’t want easy access to Pac-Man with old-school joysticks and buttons? If a coffee table arcade is too much of a spatial commitment for you, a nightstand can be hacked for the same purpose as well.
In the event that old school arcade games aren’t your cup of tea, you still have plenty of great furniture hacks to choose from for the living room. Here are some of our favourites:
- A Computer In A Leather Recliner
- Transform An IKEA Chair Frame Into A Portable Computer Desk
- Make an Awesome Coffee Table Out Of Magazine Holders And A Stool
- Beautify Your Bookcases With Custom Colour-Changing Lights
- Make Your Shelves Spell Out Their Purpose
People see what you put in your living room more than any other place in the house. It’s the best place to hack your furniture into something amazing because then you’ll have no trouble showing it off.
Kitchen
You might not find a lot of furniture in the kitchen but you can perform a few hacks that provide some handy features while you’re cooking. A DIY vertical dish drainer makes for less cleanup work. For more fun, mount an iPad into a cabinet door. If you’ve always wanted a nice kitchen island but didn’t want to pay a fortune for it, you can make one out of an IKEA sideboard.
Bedroom
The bedroom offers a limited number of options as well, seeing as you only truly need a bed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t hack what you’ve got. Of all the bedroom hacks, adding storage to your bed by repurposing a bunch of shelves is potentially the most useful. You might want to consider adding an articulating arm for your ereader or tablet for easy access. If you want to offer seating for the occasional visitor, this nice bookcase-turned-bench provides an attractive option on the cheap. If you want some extra shelving in the corner of your wall, use a magazine rack (or two).
Happy Friday and enjoy hacking your furniture!
