Dear Lifehacker,

As fellow purveyors of alcoholic beverages and in the industry of finding new and potentially cheaper and more effective ways of doing things, what would you recommend is the best way to get into home brewing , why and how?

Keep Track Of Your Hourly Wage, Even If You're Salaried

Oct 2, 2014, 11:55am

This. This is so much of what needs to change in the modern office environment. We need to fundamentally change how we view our time and value. What's the point of earning x amount of money when all it does is sit in an account. Earn what you need to make you happy and find a way of negotiating the time you need to actually live. The 9-5 mentality needs to die sooner rather than later.

How Much Does A $700,000 Property In Sydney Really Cost? [Infographic]

Aug 6, 2014, 3:16pm

Sydney's property market is far from sustainable and we will be seeing the bubble burst in the next 5-10 I would imagine. There is no way our wage growth can support a generation of new home owners paying 6 million plus for a two bedder.

How Long Do US Movies Take To Reach Australian Cinemas On Average? [Infographic]

Jul 1, 2014, 4:15pm

As a veteran of the film industry - the reason behind the delay largely has to do with Australian classification legislation and release timing. Studio's carefully plan their releases to accrue maximum target audience (obviously sometimes they get it wrong) but this is to give it the best possible opening weekend. The exact number escapes me but basically if in the first 4 days a film doesn't make a decent profit your going to try to cut your loses.

The studio I worked for would sometimes launch pre-US if we had a large première happening or some other strategic reason (such as Australia day long weekend or whatever).

TV shows are a totally different animal and I personally blame Foxtel.

Lovehacker: How Do I Stop Gaming From Ruining My Love-Life?

Its all about compromise. My lady doesn't like games at all but she still respects my need for my alone time - as long as your partner knows they come first there should be no issues with it unless they are being selfish.

Why Elite School Sport Training Is A Dumb Idea

Oct 1, 2013, 10:04am

Good point. It is a bit worrying how much emphasis is placed upon young athletes without any thought to what might happen if/when they don't succeed.

My brother had a large quantity of his high-school years dedicated to sports and missed out on an 8 figure contract by about 4cm of height, not skill level but height.

In that scenario the school and my folks weren't so focused on this 'elite' concept and he was actually able to get a decent education at the same time so all was not lost but it just worries me how parents and educators can willingly put all of one students eggs in one basket that only 1 in every thousand or so can actually succeed at.

Where Have IT Salaries Actually Changed?

Oct 24, 2012, 10:13pm

It was just unfounded whinging to be honest, doesn't make it any less true. Downward pressure on salaries is most likely due to the market being flooded and supply over weighing demand for particular positions or fluctuations in technical skill relevance, not upper echelon salary packages. That does not change the fact that there is a disproportionate amount of money paid to a few top tier personnel on a scale that defies reasonable compensation. And before you pull out the argument of 'anti-capitalism, no incentive for promotional growth etc. etc.' let me remind you that there is a difference between an incentive and a gross incentive. Either way my rant is over - just felt like coming back at you cause I could. Also please unless you are living in Sydney Australia you loose the right to comment sarcastically on cost of living.

Where Have IT Salaries Actually Changed?

Oct 23, 2012, 10:28am

glad to see corporations putting downward pressure on salaries when there is an exponential increase in living costs.

Is no one else incredibly tired of companies trying to minimize lower end salaries while maximizing upper tier pay packages? so much rage....so few things...can..do..about...it....gyarr...

Forget Android: iPhone Is Better For Hacking And Customisation

Jun 8, 2012, 1:51pm

Lol. Also I haven't seen Android people seeing themselves as "elitest" I just tend to see people who are into technology using the droid platform, that's not to say its exclusive, just something I have noticed. All this hate is just making the tech community seem like a bunch of petty idiots - people have these things called preferences? any one platform could be technically more proficient however its not that hard for someone to have and enjoy using the other because they like it more...

Forget Android: iPhone Is Better For Hacking And Customisation

Jun 8, 2012, 10:40am

I have used both extensively in customization and haven't found Android to be harder to root, IOS was significantly more difficult (SHSH blob backups anyone?) initially but became easier as the tools got better. Both have great customization options however I always felt limited by IOS for some reason - probably due to the fact that customisation of an Apple device is considered to be taboo by the manufacturer but on the Android platform it is encouraged. Both are good and I cant wait to have a crack at a windows phone some day, its all preference. And Corey - chill out people are entitled to different opinions.
