How Long Can You Store Opened Wine For? [Infographic]

In Australia, most wines now come with twist caps, which makes it much easier to store half-consumed bottles for later drinking. However, once that seal is broken, oxygen, moisture and other contaminants are allowed to get inside which will eventually ruin the flavour. This infographic looks at how long different wine varieties typically last after you open them – from bubbly whites to full-bodied reds.

Nobody wants to taste turned wine – one tiny sip is enough to sour your palate and compromise the flavour of subsequent, unspoiled wines. Thankfully, it’s not difficult to eliminate guesswork by following these tried-and-tested tips:

If you’re a red wine drinker, a good rule of thumb is to keep the bottle corked, in a cool and dark spot, and drink it 3-5 days after opening. For white wines, it can depend on the type, but on average you have about 5 days to finish a bottle of white that has been kept in the fridge and corked. If you’re a fan of the latest in wine trends – anything sparkling such as Prosecco and Cava – then you want to finish off the bottle after it’s been in the fridge for a day or two – three tops.

The makers of the infographic also recommend keeping opened bottles away from appliances such as ovens and dishwashers, as the heat these appliances generate can cause the wine to turn a lot earlier. In addition to explaining when to discard different varieties of opened wine, the graphic also contains storage advice for unopened bottles and tasting notes to watch out for.
