Wine is complicated, but knowing more about what you’re drinking increases the pleasure. If you want a better appreciation and understanding of what you’re drinking, this infographic from Wine Investment is a great tool.
The image doesn’t overwhelm you with detail, but it gives you a sense of what colours to look for, what glasses to use, and what various terms mean. I particularly enjoyed the spoked presentation of various aromas you might smell. The full graphic (linked below) is quite detailed; Business Insider has a useful walkthrough of it.

Are my eyes playing tricks on me or are pinot noir and merlot are in no way representative of the actual colours of the wine?
I, also don’t understand why the two lines above simply explain the body/age..
Any wine served at 4 degrees will have little discernible flavour since it is simply too cold.
My advice – find a winery you like and talk to the winemaker. Most of the time they are more than willing to share some of their knowledge with you, and you’d be surprised at how much you can learn.
