Revealed: Australia’s Best Mobile Phone Data Deals

They often say that quality trumps quantity, but when it comes to mobile data, I’d argue that you may as well get as much as you can for your money.

Especially in Australia, where most of us live in capital cities and where all three mobile networks perform well. The latest OpenSignal coverage awards, announced this week, gave all of the medals to Vodafone, but it was a tight race between all of the networks. In the average download speed category in particular.

So if quality isn’t a concern for most, and we’re free to focus on quantity, let’s find ourselves some big, big data plans, shall we? (Note: Our interactive tables may take a few seconds to load. Thanks for your patience!)

Top 10 big data plans (at least 20GB)

You know what? I’ve been writing about phone plans for years and I’ve never had the chance to say ‘Think Mobile has the best plan’ before. Well, get ready for it.

Think Mobile has the best plan. At least, it has the plan with the most data for the lowest price.

If you take a look, Think has an interesting structure for its plans at the moment. It has three price points: $30, $37 and $48 per month. And at each price you choose between three contract terms: month-to-month, 6-month or 12-month options, and for each, the data doubles from the previous contract tier. For example, in the $48 plan you get 20GB with no contract, 40GB for 6-month contract and a whopping 80GB when you sign up for a year. The Think service is on the Vodafone 4G network.

Interestingly, Vodafone is next in the list and you get the same 80GB but for twice the price. Vodafone plans come with a bunch of extras though, like $5 per day international roaming, free international text and 3000 minutes to call a bunch of countries overseas. But, $100 is a lot of money.

On the Telstra network, Woolworth’s have a great deal with 30GB of data for $50 per month. Telstra has a similar deal in its online-only Mx plan, which you can see it here.

Big data plans can come with big price tags, as you can see above, but if you’re like me, it’s been a while since I’ve paid more than $40 per month for my plan. What do the plans look like when you filter out the ritzy ones?

Best big boys under $40 per month

Would you believe it? I get to say it again. Think Mobile has the best plan. Of course, that is only true if you are looking for a no-frills plan on a 12-month contract. Otherwise you should consider the Virgin Mobile option with Data Rollover, unlimited music streaming and credit for calling overseas.

Most of the plans in this table are on either the Vodafone network (Think Mobile, Vodafone) or the Optus network, but if you need Telstra coverage then Woolies is your go-to plan.
