In the process of testing 17 veggie burger patties, Consumer Reports did a whole lot of grilling. And while they were grilling they learned a thing or two about getting the best out of a veggie patty. Here’s what they learned:
- Don’t thaw frozen veggie burgers — they can go straight from the freezer to a clean grill.
- Set the grill to medium heat and don’t oil the grates. Preheat the grill for 10 minutes.
- If the veggie burger package has grilling instructions, follow them. If no instructions are provided, cook burgers for about 5 minutes per side.
- Flip burgers carefully and just once, halfway through cooking, to keep them from falling apart.
Grilling is particularly useful when you want a more meat-like texture from your veggie burgers too. Plus, grilling is more fun, especially when it’s nice outside. You can also make your own burgers with a few simple ingredients.

Pefect veggie burger? Isn’t that an oxymoron, like “The perfect cancer”?
A friend of mine brought her new boyfriend to my weekend BBQ once, he had his own veggie burgers and asked if I could clean a corner of the hotplate and if I had some spare tongs and spatula so that his burgers didn’t get contaminated by anything that has touched meat. I asked why he had even bothered to come to a BBQ and told him to just f…off. He did. See what veggie burgers do to your mind?
Maybe just have grilled veggies, or a real burger instead. I dont see the point of pretend meat products.
