At this weeks’s re:Invent conference, Amazon announced a new service for developers looking to create AR, VR and 3D apps. Sumerian lets developers build realistic virtual environments, populate them with 3D objects and animated characters, and script how they interact with each other and the application’s users.
Sumerian will run in any browser that supports WebGL or WebVR graphics rendering including Daydream, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and iOS mobile devices.
Access to Sumerian is via the AWS Management Console – there is no software to install or upfront costs as Sumerian uses Amazon’s normal “pay for what you use” billing.
Sumerian allows developers to design VR, AR, and 3D environments using drag and drop as well as a library of pre-built objects and templates with pre-populated scenes. It leverages AWS services such as Amazon Lex, Amazon Polly, AWS Lambda, AWS IoT, and Amazon DynamoDB.
AI support lets developers create animated 3D characters that can guide users through a scene by narrating scripts or answering questions.
The main components of Sumerian are:
- A web-based editor for constructing 3D scenes, importing assets, scripting interactions and special effects, with cross-platform publishing.
- A library of pre-built objects and templates and the ability to upload your own 3D assets.
- A JavaScript library
- Integration with other Amazon services
Sumerian scenes run in any browser that supports WebGL or WebVR graphics rendering. Amazon Sumerian scenes are hosted in the AWS cloud and served from a publicly accessible endpoint, so that users can access them from anywhere.
