The latest updates and additions for Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.

- Microsoft’s big launch for the week was Azure App Service, a group of tools aimed at making building cross-platform apps hosted on Azure. Tools include Web Apps (previously branded as Azure Websites) and specific packages for building mobile apps and drawing on Azure-hosted APIs for common enterprise platforms.
- Azure also beefed up its backup and site recovery features, adding the ability to back up Windows and Linux infrastructure-as-a-service virtual machines and to use Azure for disaster recovery for VMware servers.
- Google’s big launch for the week was Cloud Launcher, which automates the process of deploying software on Google Cloud Platform. More than 120 open source programs are included in the initial release, including such familiar tools as Apache, MySQL, WordPress and SugarCRm.
- Amazon’s big launch for the week was the ability to easily replicate S3 data stores across different AWS regions. Cross-region replication enables data to be easily stored for DR in entirely separate continents (you’ll pay data transfer charges plus storage at both sites, of course).
- The maximum size for virtual machines on Azure has just increased by a factor of eight. Having previously been restricted to 127GB, you can now build a VM up to 1023GB in size if you so desire.
- The AWS Management Console now allows you to search for substrings in tags — a seemingly simple feature but one which makes tagging resources far more useful.
- Amazon has also tweaked the CloudFront reporting console to allow per-device reports and exports in CSV format.
- It’s time for the six-monthly upgrade of Amazon’s Linux AMI. The 2015.03 release upgrades several of the included packages to the latest versions, including Puppet, Ruby and Python.
