How to Enable Facebook’s New Dark Mode on iPhone

Facebook’s iOS app is finally getting an official dark mode. Just like the dark modes in Facebook’s other apps — Messenger, Instagram and Whatsapp — turning on dark mode swaps the iOS app’s default white and blue interface with a black and grey theme. And it looks great, and should please those of you who haven’t already sworn off the problematic social network.

Though Facebook hasn’t formally announced dark mode’s existence, it has confirmed the new dark mode is rolling out, so some of you may not be aware that you can access it right now. Here’s how to turn on Facebook’s Dark Mode on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the Facebook app on an iOS device.
  2. Tap the “Menu” tab on the bottom menu.
  3. Scroll down and tap “Privacy and Settings.”
  4. A shortcut toggle for Dark Mode will be here, provided you have it. Tap it to turn on the new theme.

If you don’t see a Dark Mode option in the app yet, you’re not alone. Facebook says “only a small percentage” of iOS users have the feature right now. It’s unclear if the new dark mode setting is only rolling out to specific devices and iOS versions. We also don’t know if the setting is turned on server-side or if you need to update the iOS app first.

I looked for the new theme on an iPhone 7 and an iPad Pro (to see if Dark Mode is also on iPadOS). Neither had the option, and there were no pending updates for the app on either device. It’s possible newer devices are more likely to get dark mode sooner, but it looks like this will be yet another slow feature rollout from Facebook. Gotta love it.

Be sure to keep the Facebook app updated and check the “Privacy and Security” shortcuts periodically — the Dark Mode toggle is bound to show up at some point.
