Choose The Right Career Track For You With This Job Posting Exercise

So many careers. So little time to explore them all. If you’re having a tough time figuring out your career path (or what you really want to do with your life), NYU’s three-step tracks exercise can help you narrow down your potential career, using job listings.

The first step is to collect job postings that appeal to you, sorting them by whether you’re drawn to the organisation (its mission, values and purpose — regardless of the individual job description) or if you’re drawn to the job description (skills needed and responsibilities — regardless of the company associated with the job posting). Circle the parts you like and can see yourself doing.

After you’ve collected at least 50 of these, you’ll look for patterns in what you’ve collected. Career tracks aren’t just about the field you’re working in or the responsibilities for particular job titles. They’re also about the kinds of organisations that do this work and where they are.
