Now that Amazon is getting into the grocery business locally, there’s more competition for the big two, Coles and Woolworths. But is there a margin to be had through Amazon? I put together a simple shopping basket to compare Amazon with Coles and Woolies.
I’ve gone for a basic shopping basket with the usual staples.
- Bread
- Milk
- Weet-Bix
- Vegemite
- Coca Cola
- Doritos
- Pasta
- Mince
- Pasta Sauce
- Vanilla Ice Cream
Here’s what I found:

Conclusions
There’s no subtle way to say this – on my basic shopping basket, shopping at Amazon Pantry still means I need to go to the supermarket. There’s no fruit and veg, no cold products and even with basic staples the range is pretty skinny.
It’s not ready for the big time yet.
