Cake is a food worthy of exaltation, which is why cake stands are so very important. Not only do they lift the dessert to its proper place on high, but they make it easier to get to by providing an easily leveraged point of entry to the base of the cake. That’s ok, because I’m sure you have a plate and a bowl which, as Food52 points out, is all you need to create a pretty little serving place for your cake.
Just take a sturdy bowl (or large bowl-like mug or small aesthetically pleasing colander), flip it over, and place a pretty plate on top. Boom, instant cake stand. For small cakes or cupcakes, you can even use saucers and tea cups, though if a cake is that small, you can probably just serve it directly in your hand.
