The Next Big Thing In Smartphones: Hypnotic Back Plates

Nubia is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer that you’ve almost certainly never heard of – but that could be about to change if its new ‘Nubia X’ model is any indication.

The intriguing new Android comes with a striking point of difference: a ‘hidden’ 5.1-inch display on the rear chassis. Now that’s how you do dual screens on a phone!

The Nubia X might have a rubbish name (seriously, can we just drop ‘X’ as a naming convention for a while?), but when a phone has a trick this cool up its sleeve we’re willing to overlook it.

As recently uncovered by Ice Universe, the Nubia X comes with a second OLED screen on the reverse side measuring 5.1 inches with a native resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels (the front display is a more conventional 6.26-inch OLED boasting 2280 x 1080 pixels.)

This in itself is noteworthy, but what really sets the phone apart from competitors is the rear screen’s completely opaque surface which blends into the metal beneath. This allows it to pull off cool effects like this:

And this:

If you’re the type of person who likes getting noticed while fiddling with your phone on the train, this visual trickery is sure to be high on your wish list.

For everyone else, the 5.1-inch screen has a genuinely useful purpose – it can be employed while taking selfies with the rear camera for print-worthy photos. You can also use the animation tool to display clocks and/or notifications.

Otherwise, this is a standard mid-range Android in terms of specifications: the entry-level version comes with a Snapdragon 845 CPU, 6GB of RAM, 64GB storage and a 3800-mAh battery.

There’s currently no word on whether Nubia will be releasing the X outside of China. With any luck you’ll be able to pick up an overseas model that’s compatible with Aussie networks.

With a starting price of 3283 Yuan (around AU$650), it also isn’t too expensive. We’ll be chasing down a review unit to let you know how it fares!
