Learn To Build Node.js Web Apps With This Zine

If you're new to building web apps, check out the first issue of You Got This! a friendly zine from developer community Glitch. The issue teaches the basic concepts behind web servers, and the npm package manager for Javascript. It also features career profiles of three community-leading web developers, and blurbs of advice from a dozen more developers from places such as Google, Mozilla and Slack.

The npm package manager helps web developers build powerful sites and apps without making every component from scratch. As the zine explains, "it makes it easy for JavaScript developers to reuse code other developers have shared… A typical application or website will consist of dozens or hundreds of small packages of code." For example, a package might let users log into your site with their Facebook account. Npm keeps all your packages updated, so any bug fixes or new features will also apply to your site.

Each conceptual explanation ends with a link to a project or course on Glitch, where you can learn how to develop websites and web apps. The professional advice focuses on the early stage of a coder's education, and runs a wide gamut. The blurbs can seem contradictory on the surface: One developer says to start by only getting something to work, while another says that approach slowed her down. But together they show the diverse routes that developer careers take, and they send a message: When you're first learning to develop, take whatever approach keeps you interested and motivated.

This looks pretty good actually. It kind of reminds me of the old books back in the Commodore 64 days
