Amazon AppStream Adds New Features

Amazon’s AppStream lets you run apps that are hosted on AWS through to devices running a HTML 5 friendly browser. This makes application deployment easier and allows you to deliver apps made for one platform, such as a traditional PC, to different platforms such as tablets. And while not every app is designed to be touch-screen friendly, it’s a lot easier than buying new software or redeveloping programs for the BYOD mobile world

A number of updates have been added to AppStream 2.0. These are:

  • Fleet Auto Scaling which allows you to use the CloudWatch metrics to scale your fleet up and down in response to changes in demand.
  • Image Builder so you can build your own AppStream 2.0 images that contain your choice of applications.
  • SAML 2.0 Authentication.
  • New Fleet Management options for the instances that run your applications.
  • You can observe and monitor seven Amazon CloudWatch metrics, including the size and overall utilisation of your fleets.

Jeff Barr runs through all of the new features in some detail at the AWS Blog.

It’s well worth a look if you’re thinking of looking at Desktop as a Service deployment. There’s a Amazon’s Region Table, AppStream 2.0 is not available out of the Sydney region yet.
