When someone asks what you do, it’s easy to centre you answer on what you’ve been working on recently or what you’ve done in the past, but focusing on the future makes your elevator pitch more engaging. Here’s what we mean.

By focusing on your future goals, you give people listening to you something to latch onto since they might be able to offer advice, connections, or even just encouragement. You also give them a hook to use next time you see them. They can ask how you’re progressing on your aspirations and are more likely to remember what you discussed with them last time.
If you want to encourage conversation, add a question to the end, like “What you’re working on?” or “What are your plans for the year?” If the other person has expertise in the area you want to work towards, ask them for advice or resource recommendations.
