If you can’t make your own barbecue sauce, or find your favourite brand at the store, Ariel Kanter at Serious Eats recommends you upgrade a bottle of the mass produced stuff by reaching for the soy sauce. The salty, savoury flavour of the soy sauce will keep that sweetness from being too overwhelming. If you don’t have any soy sauce in your cupboard, vinegar, hot sauce or citrus can help as well.
