Upgrade Your Morning Porridge By Toasting The Oats First

Steel cut oats make for a delicious healthy breakfast. For an added kick, The Kitchn has a suggestion: Toast the oats first in the same saucepan you plan to cook them in. They’ll get a rich, nutty, sweetness that really adds to the flavour with minimal effort.

Here’s how to do it: Melt a little butter in the saucepan or pot you plan to cook the oats in anyway, and then add your oatmeal. Let them toast over medium heat for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to darken a bit. When they’re a few shades darker and start to smell a little like popcorn, they’re ready. Add your water or milk and cook as normal. That’s all there is to it.

Our resident porridge addict and high priest of the church of steel-cut oats Mark Serrels is also keen on this method. Hit the link below to read the full post over at The Kitchn.
