MeetingCalc Shows How Costly Meetings Are

iOS: If your office is plagued by lengthy meetings that drag on while everyone has to have their say, MeetingCalc is the mobile app for you. Start the timer, set the hourly rate of everyone in the room combined, and the app will keep a running log of how much the meeting is costing the company as the minutes tick past.

MeetingCalc is $0.99 in the iTunes App Store, and while it would be nice if it had a calculator that let you input the salaries of the people who walk in the room and deduced the total hourly cost of the meeting for you, it’s not bad as-is.

When I was a project manager, I often pointed to the fact that the meetings we had — even if I had to schedule them — cost money and wasted time, and it’s best for everyone involved to get through the agenda as quickly as possible with as little deviation as possible. MeetingCalc is an app that can show you, in dollars and cents, how much those lengthy meetings actually cost.

Granted, you have to be in a position to influence those meetings for the app to be really useful. Otherwise the app is more of a gag you can use to commiserate with coworkers who just had to sit through the same meeting. Either way, it’s not a bad use of the small purchase cost, especially if you feel like you spend more time meeting to talk about work than you actually work.

How do you deal with lengthy, unnecessary meetings? Does your company do anything to make sure they’re brief, or only the important ones get scheduled? Share your suggestions in the comments below.
