Oh. Well this kind of sucks. At first I thought this was gonna be an improvement to Android's native Gmail client, but as I understand it, you'll only see the update if you take the extra step to open up Gmail in your browser.

That really kinda sucks for Android. One of the biggest appeals to me of Android was getting all of Androids services tightly integrated on a single device. I was able to handle using Tasks and Docs through the browser, but I seriously hope that the Gmail stand-alone app gets in on some of this action with the Cupcake release. Otherwise, this is really kind of disappointing.

Nice new interface, but it would be great if I could just get push going.

I wish Gmail looked so good on my LG Vu. If iPhone at least keeps you logged in, it's worth it for me. My phone randomly logs me out, and usually cannot read the email if it is a comment approval from my blog, [kikolani.com.]

As much as I would love to use this, it is all useless for me until Apple allows non-native apps access to provide alerts. It is the one thing stopping any of the iPhone todo apps from being complete.

I agree. T-Mobile doesn't offer 3G service in my area and I don't have strong signal or reliable WiFi in my office. I much prefer the background sync behavior of the native Android apps over using apps in my browser. I use Astrid for tasks because I don't want to deal with requiring an active connection just to check my task list.

I wish they'd update the installable Google app for the Blackberry - no ability to work with labels means that the only thing it's got going for it is the threaded conversation view.

Looks good, but I still don't understand why it's impossible to see your chat history using a mobile device.

Mail interface is nice. I like the fact that I can type an e-mail in landscape mode... Might have to start using this instead of the native mail app.

I would love to see the iPhone mail app updated with Gmail mobile's features.

You can't Add labels to a message, which makes inbox cleanup while you are waiting in line impossible.

Very disappointing considering how much of a pleasure it is to work with combo boxes on the iphone.

I like the fact that google talk is now usable.

Like the new interface, and it's definitely faster, but do anyone else's contacts not show up in the menu? Is the only way to view your contacts through composing a new message?

I still can't add a label to a message using gmail on Safari on my iPhone. Its nice to view labels, but I want to add them too.

I wish there was just as much emphasis getting push notifications worked out as there was getting all the 'cloud' services updated and looking spiffy.

My wish list, in short:

* True Push e-mail on WinMo devices without the use of 3rd party applications. Either a native WinMo app or make use of ActiveSync / Exchange.

* Fix the contacts. I shouldn't have to label Verizon Wireless as Verizon_Wireless to avoid it hitting my list of contacts as Unknown.

Basically, they say it is easier & faster to develop for web apps, and if a feature catches on, they will look at porting it to the built-in application.

I think this rocks, actually. I have a G1 that I use for my personal gmail account, but I also have work google apps account. To use them both, I have the G1 IMAP into Google Apps and pull down the headers. If it's something I need to reply/work-with, I pull up the browser )which stores my apps login) and get the superior browser interface. It's not ideal, but it works.

the new GUI also let's you compose messages while offline. They are marked as sent immediately after hitting send, and then sent in the background later when a wifi or 3G connection is available. As an iPod touch user, it will be nice to be able to read and compose offline messages. For iPhone users, the speed improvements should be welcome improvements. Still no way to add or remove labels though. Cmon labels, let's go!

Its great that I can invite people to events within calendar. Not sure why this feature is not in the native application.

It's nice that it still doesn't run in standalone mode. We'll probably never get a native iPhone/touch application, so it would be nice if they added a simple meta tag so that it doesn't launch in Safari.

Just tried composing a long e-mail on my iPhone, but apparently you can't scroll back to parts of the message that have fallen outside the message body box. The announcement got my hopes up, too bad it disappoints.

@VivianaAnticlea: considering google isn't making money off of android and they didn't even use their own Android OS in this video (assuming they made the video) i think, honestly, Google doesn't really care that much what G1 users do.

@Goon: i told my iPhone to check my GMail account in the native email app. You could do the same to let you know *when* you have new email, then use the shortcut given in this to actually read, write and reply.

@diamonddnice: Sorry man but google really cares about android. They spend a lot of money on it and they are trying to compete with iphone. And it will work. In a few years there will still be one iphone but a lot of android based phones.. I think the g1 support for gmail will even surpass that of the iphone.

@Xanderificus: Dumb Ass Facebooker question: When you say "show up" what do you mean? I went to gmail.com on my iPhone and when I entered my gApps email address I was redirected to some create a gmail account page. Am I missing something? This looks cool and all, but I really want push!

The problem with the blackberry is that each blackberry has an entirely different operating system. It make programming for them a complete pain. Android and the iPhone don't change much across versions, so it is a lot easier to write programs for them.

New and improved my ass. I was fine with the old method, because I could actually check my email. Now it doesn't work at all for me. Where can I get a way to change back to the simpler method?
