To Start Waking Up Early, Acknowledge That It Sucks

If you’re having a hard time waking up early, it may help to embrace one simple fact: getting out of bed on that first early morning is like ripping off a band-aid.

You can try to make things easier on yourself with our many sleep and morning related hacks. Give yourself plenty of time to sleep, avoid screens, caffeine and alcohol in the evening, and set an actually effective alarm. But if you’re not in the mood to wake up when it goes off, the only way to build that habit is to actually get the fuck up.

“It is much better to go through life attacking days than by getting attacked by days,” says former Navy SEAL Jocko Willink. He has a little inspirational pep talk here about the secret to waking up at 4:30 a.m. The secret is: you decide when to get up, and if 4:30 is your decision, well, you stick to it.

It sucks, I know. Willpower is overrated, so in most cases I’d say if you need to rely on willpower you’ve probably already set yourself up for failure. But if you’re a night owl trying to get on an early-morning schedule—which is possible!—you need to understand it’s going to suck at first, and you need to get up anyway. After a few days, your body will be ok with the new wake-up time. But the only way to establish that habit is to get your butt out of bed on time whether you like it or not.
