For most of us, asking for a raise is always a little awkward. How much do you ask for? This survey sheds a little light.
Career blog Paysa surveyed 2431 workers, some of them managers and executives, to get their insights into negotiating a raise. One question they asked: how much is too much?
Surprisingly, 29 per cent of managers said no amount is too high as long as it reflects your value as an employee. The largest percentage (38.8 per cent) said that more than five per cent of your current salary is too much.
Amusingly, 16.3 per cent of managers said anything above one per cent is too high. For most workers, that’s barely enough to cover an extra cup of coffee per week.
This data is interesting to know, but most negotiating experts would probably agree: it shouldn’t keep you from shooting for more. Sometimes employers can afford to pay you a hell of a lot more than you might think, and you never know if you don’t ask.
