Zelmyra and Herbert Fisher were married for almost 87 years, so it’s safe to say they know a thing or two about marriage. The Fisher’s participated in a Q&A on Twitter and shared some advice on love and commitment.

Some of their answers are great tips and carry a lot of weight when you consider how long they had been together:
- We grew up together and were best friends before we married. A friend is for life; our marriage has lasted a lifetime.
- Remember marriage is not a contest, never keep a score. God has put the two of you together on the same team to win.
- Agree that it’s OK to disagree, and fight for what really matters. Learn to bend — not break!
- There’s no secret to our marriage, we just did what was needed for each other and our family.
- Respect, support, and communicate with each other. Be faithful, honest, and true. Love each other with ALL of your heart.
Herbert passed away in 2011 at the age of 105 and Zelmyra followed in 2013 also at the age of 105, but the Fishers leave behind a strong example of lasting love and marital commitment for all of us.

I’ve been married, coming up on twenty-seven years now and I can tell you there is no manual, and no one fix for all. I often wonder how my wife put up with me for so long, we couldn’t be any more different in our personalities. I am, (more so in the past than now), pretty fast to fire up, whilst my wife is like a boat on a lake, just serene in all things… We’ve never been the lovey-dovey types, yet we seem to get closer each year. We spend all our free time together, and as we’ve gotten older and more settled, find it hard to be apart. Now that’s marriage..! 🙂
I’ve only been married for 4 years but together with my wife for more than 8. This sounds pretty much exactly like us, except reverse the roles; I am pretty easy going, things roll over me and I don’t let things affect me but she can kick off at the drop of a hat, lets stress get to her etc. She is originally from China as well so dealing with the culture differences is also interesting at times.
Its definitely not easy being married but it is rewarding. And being able to live your life with someone you care about even if you have different personalities and clash.
congratulations! sounds like despite being different people, you two are happy together. Good on you 🙂
God, we have so much difficulty putting up with you, how did SHE manage to do it for twenty-seven years?!
Just kidding, well done! I’ll be married 5 years in October and I’m the boat in the lake in our relationship. Not sure how she’s put up with me either!
Heh..! came close to a flame war there..! But thanks anyway.. 🙂
Marriage is a lot like an orange. First, you have the skin. Then the sweet, sweet innards. Mmm…
I would love to see the same thing done with the Chands. Married over 88 years I’m pretty sure.
Still believe that happy wife = happy life
