Last week, we showed you how to turn a $2 Hungry Jack’s Sausage & Egg Muffin into a McOz-style burger by loading up on free salads. Several readers were curious to know what the results looked and tasted like. Surprisingly awesome, it turns out.
If you missed last week’s post, the Aussie Battler is a bespoke burger consisting of sausage, egg, lettuce, tomato, onion and beetroot on muffin-style bread.
The ingenuity of this burger is that it only costs $2. Because Hungry Jack’s lets you add salad to any burger free of charge, you only have to pay for a regular Sausage & Egg Muffin. While it’s not quite as big as a proper Aussie Burger and comes with different bread, the total saving is close to 75 per cent. We’d say that’s worth the size downgrade.
I picked up my salad-laden muffin at Hungry Jack’s Circular Quay outlet a little before 11am. Requesting the extras was as smooth as could be. (The cashier did ask me if I wanted to get a meal deal, although they always do that.) Naturally, I had to wait a few minutes longer but the wait was worth it: even in the wrapping it was obvious I had more substantial meal on my hands.
So without further ado, here’s what the Hungry Jack’s Aussie Battler looks like:
Not bad for $2, eh? Here’s how it looks compared to the Hungry Jack’s Aussie:
Amusingly, this actually isn’t too dissimilar to the average Takeaway Truth comparison.
As $2 burgers go, the Aussie Battler is about as good as you could hope for. The addition of all that salad boosts what is essentially a brekkie snack into a pretty decent lunch; especially if you add bacon for an extra $1.
The only downside is that you have to order it before 11am, which puts you firmly in brunch territory. That said, the same McOz trick can be applied to a Whopper or cheeseburger for a saving of $2.05 and $4.75, respectively. But for the ultimate cheapskate’s burger, it’s hard to go past this $2 muffin on steroids.

Was my first thought as well!
Radical!
Cow-abunga! Sorry.
@chrisjager Totally chew-bular!
You can add a piece of meat for about 50c or something, if you want a more filling burger, and change the bun if you ask nicely 🙂
> Because Hungry Jack’s lets you add salad to any burger free of charge,
Is there anywhere that says you can add salad for free?
I’ve been searching and even ringing HJ’s, and the best I have gotten is being told it WAS once part of the “Have it your way” promotion.
The word directly from HJ’s head office Perth after I hassled them some more:
Thank you for querying our procedures regarding a free salad upgrade in burgers. Currently, we do not charge for extra salad to be added to our existing burgers with salads. Our cheeseburgers, however, do not come with salad and if you wish to add salad you would need to order a Whopper Jr.
I bought a $2 BBQ beef burger (bun, patty, cheese, mayo,BBQ sauce) hold the BBQ sauce, add lettuce and tomato and wallah! Almost a whopper 😉 it still cost $2.
