New figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that there were more than 2.1 million active businesses in Australia in June 2012. That number is dominated by very small operations: more than half those businesses have an annual turnover of less than $200,000 a year.

Here’s how those numbers break down:
- 597,930 businesses had between $0 and $50,000 in turnover;
- 739,89 had between $50,000 and $200,000;
- 673,065 had between $200,000 and $2 million;
- 130,416 had more than $2 million.

Dumb Question – is that after tax and expenses have been paid and that’s what they have left over?
Barry – its’ turnover only.
So all costs are to come from this including:
Cost of Goods /Services
Wages
Rent
Rates
Insurance
Power/Water
Accounting and professional costs
etc…..
No, I think this how much money they’ve made before all the expenses. At least that is how “turnover” is defined in accounting.
Turnover = revenue = money in before any expenses

Comma is in the wrong place or a digit is missing
73,989 had between $50,000 and $200,000
Must be a digit missing, or an incorrect analysis of the numbers
It is 739,869
A lot of those are shell companies used to buy things from companies that only sell to entities with an ABN?
No, the sad truth is that most small businesses fail in a short time and, as these numbers show, the majority make very little in the way of income (or profit).
More likely businesses operated outside someone’s main employment.
