If you’re a professional photographer, you probably haul your gear around in well-insulated protective cases. If you’re an amateur with a few lenses and a decent camera you want to keep safe while you head out for some shots, you need a decent case that won’t break the bank. Over at FStoppers, one budget-minded photographer managed to build his own rolling camera case for around 30 bucks with some affordable luggage and foam lining.
First of all, if you’re a professional with expensive gear who relies on the safety of that gear for your livelihood, you’re probably better off with a Pelican case to keep your gear safe. If you’re an amateur, or you can’t afford to drop the cash on a Pelican case, this luggage hack could get the job done.
Jerrit Pruyn used a simple rolling luggage case he already had and snagged a Calumet padded insert for about $US30. It worked great for him because he already had a bag that would fit, but if you don’t, these types of rolling suitcases are available at any department store in a variety of thicknesses with as much or as little padding as you may need. All in all, it’s a pretty nice repurposing effort, and the results are effective. I don’t know if I’d trust it in checked baggage at an airport, but I’d definitely carry it with me in the car or from place to place on foot. What do you think? Any ideas to improve on the idea?
