When it comes to photography, money only gets you so far. Sure, a more expensive camera and lens combo will give better results, but if you’re stuffing up the basics, well, all the Photoshop skills in the world won’t help. This comparison video of pro versus amateur by Mango Street shows exactly how your abilities can let you down, regardless of gear.
In the clip, professional photographers Daniel Inskeep and Rachel Gulotta, each armed with Canon Rebel T3i cameras (better known as the EOS 600D in Australia) and basic lenses (adding up to about $US500 each second-hand), go up against their inexperienced mate Justin, wielding a $US5000 Canon 5D MkIV setup.
Justin goes first and the results are honestly okay, but lack a certain depth and dynamism compared to the later shots from Inskeep and Gulotta. The pros are also more communicative with the model, which allows them to get the exact composition they’re after.
The moral of the story? If you’re just not getting the photos you want from your expensive camera gear, it might be time to brush up on the fundamentals, or even redirecting your spending from pricey lens to lessons or a tutor.
