For many of us, cartwheels are a relic of our childhood. That’s unfortunate because they’re a lot of fun and a great way to improve our coordination, strength and flexibility, too. Here’s how you can roll and tumble around like a cartwheeling pro again. Image by benaston.
Now that we’re heavier adults, we need extra strong and flexible wrists, hips and torsos to be able to support ourselves throughout a cartwheel. We also need to re-learn how to use them all together to make the movement fluid and graceful.
The other, and possibly bigger, thing holding us back is fear. To successfully cartwheel is to commit to it, and practise, practise, practise. The first drill (at the linked article below) helps you get over this fear by getting you comfortable with moving upside down and coordinating your hands and legs. Once you’re comfortable with that, you can move onto the next two progressions which are supposed to help you do the cartwheel in a straight line.
If you’re having a hard time, it’d help to loosen up your tight hips, wrists and torso. The full article also goes over great stretches to address those areas, as well as some more advanced, fancy variations you can progress to once you’ve successfully nailed a cartwheel.
