You Should Be Using Netflix’s ‘Smart Downloads’ Feature

Downloading Netflix right to your device is great – right up to the moment you run out of space and are left manually deleting every episode of Queer Eye to make way for the new season of Nailed It. But with Netflix’s latest feature, Smart Downloads, Netflix queues up the next episode of your favourite show while simultaneously deleting the ones you’ve already watched.

The process is pretty intuitive.

  • Download the first two episodes of any show.
  • Watch the first episode.
  • Netflix will immediately download the show’s third episode and delete the first episode as you’re watching the second.

While you’re watching the third episode, presto, the second is deleted. And so on – as long as your device is connected to the internet, of course. It makes for a pretty seamless viewing experience, with much less time spent worrying over what to download now and what to download later.

If you’d prefer not to have episodes delete automatically, click the “Downloads” icon, choose “Smart Downloads,” and turn off the option.

Since Smart Downloads only works while your device is online, it may not be the best choice for long trips where regular wifi connections are scarce. But if you’re able to get online even occasionally, you can ensure you’ve got the next episode downloaded so you’re not left waiting for the next hot spot to find out what happens on Mindhunter.
