Skytrax has released their annual airline rankings, where they tell the world who the best airline in the world is as well as handing out trophies for various local categories. Singapore Airlines took out the main prize, for “World’s Best Airline”, picking up that prize for the fourth time. But what about our local carriers? Here’s a look at some of the results.
The top ten airlines in the world were
- Singapore Airlines
- Qatar Airways
- ANA All Nippon Airways
- Emirates
- EVA Air
- Cathay Pacific
- Lufthansa
- Hainan Airlines
- Garuda Indonesia
- Thai Airways
Qantas just missed out on the top 10, coming in 11th place. But they did pick up a number of gongs including Best Airline in Australia/Pacific, Best Airline Staff in Australia/Pacific, Best First Class in Australia/Pacific, Best Business Class in Australia/Pacific and Best Economy Class in Australia/Pacific.
Jetstar was rewarded as the Best Low-Cost Airline in Australia/Pacific.
The awards are calculated from the responses to a massive airline passenger satisfaction survey which is fully funded by Skytrax. There were over 20 million entries this year from more than 100 countries completed from last August to this May. Airlines do not pay any survey entry or registration fee, and the awards event is free to attend. There are no charges for airline use of the award logos and results. So, it’s not one of the awards gigs where the winners are “coincidentally’ major event sponsors.
Skytrax noted that the highest nationality increase in the 2018 survey was Chinese customers with an additional 3.5 million entries – another indication of the growing middle class wealth in China as more people have access to air travel than ever before. It may also explain why one of the local Chinese carriers, China Southern Airlines, was voted World’s Most Improved Airline.
