Elevator Pitch: Gooroo

Elevator Pitch is a regular feature on Lifehacker where we profile startups and new companies and pick their brains for entrepreneurial advice. This week, we’re talking with Greg Muller, founder and CEO at Gooroo.

In 128 words or less, explain your business idea

Gooroo is the global leader in the science of human thinking. Gooroo transforms the way people, organisations and communities make decisions about the future. Gooroo delivers impact and value through three core solutions:

  • Strategic thinking and decisioning
  • Predictive people analytics
  • Career and professional development

What strategies are you using to grow and finance your idea?

In 2016, Gooroo completed a capital raise via an IPO on the Australian Stock Exchange. Investors have also participated in a subsequent equity placement.

To support with scale, we continue to put in place strategic distribution partnership and value-added reselling relationships who will represent Gooroo in market, locally and internationally. These organisations include HR, marketing and management consultancies who see Gooroo offering an extension to their existing services and a differentiation in market.

The likes of KPMG, Randstad and Kinetic IT have all deployed Gooroo’s platform this year.

How do you differentiate your business from your competitors?

Gooroo is like no other as it uses the science of human thinking at its core. Gooroo is focused on lifting the decision-making capability at all levels of an organisation. With the right people and decision-making, teams are more aligned and effective, and organisations can take better advantage of the future.

Gooroo uniquely identifies:

  • The factors holding teams back and identifies interventions to improve performance.
  • The degree to which everyone is aligned in an organisation and defines the pathways to correct any imbalance.
  • An individual’s orientation to innovation, creativity and entrepreneurism, and how to enhance these capabilities.
  • The characteristics that represent high performance in each role and offers intelligent matching capability to ensure the right person is placed in the right team.
  • Your future leaders, early and illuminates how to get them ready.

What’s the biggest challenge facing your business?

Gooroo is introducing new capability that has historically not been possible or seen before. This is challenging because it requires us to educate people first.

We are now seeing early adopters make great strides so we expect their endorsement will help create great advocates for the company.

We are also using this opportunity to continue to refine our products, services and messaging. Gooroo’s transformative power is significant so our key focus will be on continuing to solve big problems for our customers internationally.

What one phone, tablet or PC application could you not live without?

I can’t live without my iPhone because I think it’s permanently fixed to my hand! My laptop runs a close second, but my iPhone seems to run my life. Siri and I have become good friends – she seems to understand me! However, Slack is the app I use more often than any because it keeps me closely connected with the team.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received?

It was from my father – he owned a small engineering firm based in Adelaide. He told me that if I focused on the customer and worked hard on exceeding their expectations, then I would stand out from the crowd and grow my business. At the time, I didn’t appreciate the gravity of this advice. I continue to be surprised how many companies fail to meet the minimum expectations of customers, let alone meeting and exceeding them!
