I don’t believe in astrology, but I know my sign. (I’m a Sagittarius in the traditional system, Ophiuchus to stickler astronomers.) You could benefit from knowing yours, too! Just not in the way Dr Oz thinks.
On Dr Oz’s website, astrologer Rebecca Gordon explains that Sagittarians are prone to hip problems, Aries to migraines, and Cancer not to what you would think, but just “water retention, cysts and low energy”.
Let’s back up, refer to some actual science, and consider what knowing your astrological sign can really do for you. For example:
- You can enjoy reading horoscopes, which are a form of flash fiction told in the second person.
- You can generalise about other people (“ugh, that’s such a Leo thing to do”) to add some extra depth to the same complaints or compliments that you would have made anyway.
- You can buy keychains and stuff with your astrological sign on them (only recommended if you have a cool-looking astrological sign).
- You can read this and instantly have a favourite astronomical object, in case that’s the kind of question you get asked at parties.
But just to be clear, your astrological sign does not tell you what health conditions you’re susceptible to, or whether you are looking for love in all the wrong ways, or what kind of person you are going to be. Hopefully, you are going to be the kind of person who doesn’t believe in garbage.

None of these things are useful.
How do you get from “refer to some actual science” to “You can generalise about other people” ?
Nope.
It’s only use is to ridicule those who think it’s real.
Whats it useful for?
Nothing
Who is it for?
the unintelligent and gullible.
The only thing more useless than any of those points is the article itself.
‘You can generalise about other people (“ugh, that’s such a Leo thing to do”) to add some extra depth to the same complaints or compliments that you would have made anyway.’
Replace ‘leo’ with any racial slur, and it’s easy to see just how damaging and ignorant astrology is. It’s yet another mechanism we’ve created to divide us into convenient groups in order to marginalise each other.
Star signs are very useful to retrospectively predict the position of the stars at the time you were born. They can even approximately predict the position of the stars on your birthday well into the future. Talk about amazing.
