This $40,000 PC Workstation Is Terrible

We could all imagine better uses for $US30,000 ($39,942), but if you've got the money to blow, I guess you could use it to build this utterly ridiculous workstation / gaming setup. And once you were done, you'd have a long, hard look in the mirror and ask yourself: "Am I an idiot?"

Yes, yes you are.

The core of the setup from Unbox Therapy, a YouTube channel that specialises in being as loud and obnoxious as possible, is the chair, an Imperator Works IWR1. Unfortunately, it's currently unavailable on Amazon, so I have no idea how much it costs, though I think it's fair to say this contributes significantly to the price.

Or not. Apparently, the PC used is $US20,000 ($26,628) alone. After $2749 for the i9-7980XE and around $2600 for the pair of ASUS ROG GTX 1080 Tis... you have to wonder: were they trying to make the ultimate gaming setup, or just blowing as much money as possible?

In terms of other outrageous components, the central monitor is next in line: a 42.5-inch LED monitor from LG (43UD79-B). Either side at 24-inch LGs in portrait mode, which to be honest, I'm not that sold on, especially as they aren't lined up well at all.

Oh and there's a PS4.

So yeah, this isn't so much the "ultimate" gaming rig (which would involve a self-built PC, surely?), as it is a lesson in the ills of throwing money at a problem.

    Is it practical? No
    Is it awesome? Hell yes

Doesn't lifehacker have editors? Maybe take the judgmental whinging out of this article and let people do what they want with their money.

People have spent more money on handbags than this rig.

God forbid people have opinions on something. Or is that not allowed anymore?

I've gotta say I agree with the article. It's a bit hard to tell because the images are photoshopped to hell but it looks like there is a ton of LED lighting on the setup too. That'd be enough to kill the deal for me. I don't want stray light distracting me or impairing my view.

I also can't help but think for the price they're talking that they couldn't source some nice curved monitors? A huge flat panel that close wouldn't be great. Something more like : https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/monitors/gaming/49--chg90-qled-gaming-monitor-lc49hg90dmnxza/

And when it comes to "outrageous components" the monitors, well they just aren't. Even the huge central monitor is only a touch over $1000 and the pair of 24" ones are cheap as. Don't get me wrong the specs on the main monitor aren't bad. But it's certainly not "outrageous".

The chair itself doesn't look all that comfortable. Maybe it's got a lot of options to change the position, and it's just the photo that looks awkward but man it looks uncomfortable. Reminds me of a kid at a school desk, the ones back when they'd build the table into the chair.

No shit it's ridiculous. That's the whole point. It isn't practical and nobody in their right minds would buy this.

But don't tell me it wouldn't be fun to try it.

looks like someone is poor and salty
