Windows 95 was the first operating system I ever used as a kid and it certainly brings back a lot of memories for a swathe of die-hard PC users. The iconic operating system has just turned 20 today and you can drown in its nostalgia by bringing it back on your current computer.
Windows 95 was the defining operating system for Microsoft and introduced the key features that we have become so fond of from the Windows series. Remember when everybody lost their bananas over Windows 8 ditching the Start menu which led Microsoft to bring it back in Windows 10? Yep. The Start menu first appeared on Windows 95. So did the taskbar.
Windows 95 proved to be a huge hit and sold seven million copies in the first five weeks of its launch. So what better way to celebrate its 20th birthday than to boot it up on a modern PC?
Over at VirtualDesktop.org, you can load up Windows 95 on a PC through a browser. Moved on to a Mac? No problem. You can boot up Windows 95 on a browser through any machine through VirtualDesktop.org.
While you’re at it, you might want to blast the song Start Me Up by the Rolling Stones in the background. It was the Windows 95 launch song and Microsoft spent a fortune on playing it on TV commercials everywhere. You can re-live one of the ads below:

Does anyone else recognise the game that comes up at the 5-second mark? I played it as a kid, but not being able to identify it is driving me nuts!
It’s 3d Movie Maker. Enjoy!

Thank you! You just made my night! (I would upvote you so many times but can’t seem to for whatever reason.)
At school, we changed all the “You may now turn off your computer” images with the “Please wait, windows is shutting down” images. It took then weeks to figure out why there brand new window 95 PCs were “crashing” during shutdown.
Genius!
I recall a certain Individual and friends who would go into department stores, say Myer, casually browse at the PCs on sale on the electronics floor, fiddle around with the screen savers (specifically the one that displays typed messages), type something extremely naughty, set it for 15-or-so minutes, hang back out of view and watch people and the staff’s reactions at what was displayed on ALL the monitors. That was “fun” in the late 90s.
Makes you wonder if Windows ME, 2000 and Vista will get their own 20th anniversary celebrations.
