It's great to be ambitious and have high standards, but that can keep you from appreciating the simple things that can make a day great. Instead of solely focusing on high expectations that are difficult to reach or out of your control, set a low bar for your day by focusing on the small things that are going well. Henrick Edberg of The Positivity Blog explains:

One thing I like to tell myself when I wake up in the morning is this: "Have a low bar for happiness today."

As I tell myself this and try to keep it in mind during the day I appreciate things more.

The food, my work, the weather, the small events of the day becomes not everyday stuff but something I feel happy to have. The small or what may be something one takes for granted becomes something I now often pause for a moment or two to take in and appreciate.

Henrick goes on to clarify that this doesn't hinder his ambition. In fact, the happiness he achieves by appreciating the small things gives him positive energy he needs to work toward the more difficult goals.
