- More and more games have been including scenes of torture lately, with GTA and Splinter Cell being two recent examples. It’s still a sensitive subject that’s hard to pull off tastefully. Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima believes torture is definitely a subject that he feels games should explore. “If the violence will give new emotions that are important to the game, I want to put it in there, especially with this game where one of the main topics is revenge. I don’t want to walk around that.” You can read more of his musings over at Kotaku.
- Being pressed for time can make it hard to sit down and enjoy breakfast. With this in mind, PopSugar Health & Fitness has published a range of healthy ‘make-ahead’ breakfast ideas to make sure you get a decent brekkie.
- Subway has updated its $5 menu deal with an even healthier option. The $5 Low Fat Combo offers a choice between five six-inch subs; the Ham Sub, Turkey Sub, Roast Beef Sub, Chicken Strips Sub or Vegie Delight Sub, plus a 600ml bottle of water. “At this price, you can afford to come in every day,” Subway unsubtly suggests on its website. I know he’ll never read this and I’ll get down voted for this, but No, no and Fuck No.
Depiction of torture should never become part of our entertainment, for mere character development – that is just clichéd and pretty lame – cue Lethal Weapon storyline.
There are much more effective, skilful ways of doing this, without seeing characters being injected with acid, being disembowelled whilst still concious or having all their teeth crushed with pliers.
A great example of letting the imagination do the imagining, is the first 70 seconds of the link below. Used heavily by Hitchcock, and still one of the most effective mental visualisations in films.
Yeah, yeah, I know – don’t buy it if you don’t like it, yadda yadda, but don’t we have enough of an image problem already with games, without adding torture, ffs ?
Torture games already exist. Just take most R18 BDSM Japanese Dating Sim. The sick stuff they get up to in those will probably scar you for life.
