Boxee To End Standlaone Downloads

Mac/Windows/Linux: Popular HTPC front-end media manager Boxee announced the latest version of the Boxee desktop software for all systems this week, with heaps of new features including quick access to commonly-used items on the home screen, more social integration, and a retooled UI. Unfortunately this is the last version of Boxee that will be available for download; future releases will only be made available on the Boxee Box and other set-top equipment.

In addition to a tweaked home screen, the updated version also puts quick access to the menu, the browser, and Boxee’s “Live TV” dongle accessory on the home screen so you don’t have to dig to get to them. Movies and TV shows have been reorganised so you can filter and browse by genre and source as well as name.

The new version will be rolled out to Boxee Box owners in the coming week, but HTPC owners who use Boxee on their desktops running Mac OS, Windows, or Ubuntu Linux can download it right now. The catch is that this is the final version those users will ever be able to download. The company says that the future is in affordable set-top boxes, and that the popularity of the stand-alone HTPC is declining. If you’re a Boxee user or have wanted to try it, you may as well update, since there won’t be additional versions in the future.
