Cinder blocks are generally thought of as ugly, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Lifehacker reader Ronan used them in his back yard to create a shape-shifting, three-dimensional garden on the cheap.
Quite simply, I had a number of cavity blocks stacked in the corner of my garden, and I discovered one day by accident that some plant pots fitted perfectly into the cavities in the blocks.
After that, it was pretty much fair game. The blocks can be painted and stacked in any way your imagination can come up with, and nothing’s permanent since the plastic planters can simply be removed at any time. Because they’re so hefty, a garden made out of these blocks would also be safe in just about any weather, too. Thanks for the tip and photo, Ronan!
