Joost Now Offers Online TV With Only A Browser
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:00 AM on September 19, 2008
Joost, the web-based provider of on-demand and live television, launched a browser-based version of its offerings this morning. While users of the service's Mac and Windows software can still get at their channels, Joost's new model allows anyone with Flash capabilities, and a temporarily-required browser IE or Firefox plug-in, to get at the good stuff. Joost is expected to go no-plugin-required next month—nice for those on Linux or non-standard browsers—but for now, it's a bit more hassle-free to watch live or canned television at work, or show a friend that old sitcom episode you were referring to. Joost is a free service; requires a sign-up and (for the moment) browser plug-in.

It's alive for me :)
Shame I'm a GNU/Linux user and not yet supported.

No, no p2p protocol. Turn on a firewall like Sygate (Win) or Little Snitch (Mac) to see what protocol it is using.

Is this still using some sort of bittorrent protocol? I'm afraid to try it because if it uses any sort of p2p protocol I'm going to get kick off the network.

Can't wait till it's plugin free. I'm looking to drop cable and use my PS3 browser. I wish Hulu or Netflix worked.

This sounds like it may have the potential to work with the Wii Opera browser, which would be an awesome way for Wii owners to watch video on our big, fancy TVs.

I wouldn't worry about not being able to get on there - their content is largely pointless.

I wish Joost would stop calling themselves 'Online TV'. Joost does not play TV like most people think of TV. All they do is play video that can be found on the internet (ie: internet video conglomeration)
Now if someone can create a way to display TV (as in television) via a web browser, than I would be hooked. Until then, I'll stick to my Slingbox.

Hopefully this will work. the Joost player has been fragged on my (and many others') system for a year or two.
btw, that flash intro is the most annoying thing I've ever heard.

Tried it several months ago, the content isn't just pure junk. Good for Joost that they've managed to make it browser based....I'll still pass, the content is still the same ole junky stuff.

I've never heard of it before, so I went ahead and checked it out.
1. "Online TV"? WTF? This isn't online TV, it's just a collection of crappy off-the-air episodes and music videos. It's got nothing on Hulu.
2. Flash intro = want to kill self.
3. I told it to install a plugin, and it interpreted that as permission to install MS C++ Runtime 8 and put a freakin' icon in my system tray . That's not cool.
In conclusion, fail. I uninstalled it as soon as it finished with the installation of the program it didn't tell me it was going to install. And now it knows my email address. C'mon, Lifehacker.

Just uninstalled Joost a couple of months ago. Realized that I never used it because...uh...the content?...well it does truly suck. Plenty of better time-wasting options on the net. Save yourselves the trouble and the disk space all...don't even bother.

It killed my FF3 on my Mac as well. Just do a spotlight search for joost.plugin and delete it. That's how I fixed mine.
That said, I used to run the Joost client on my Mac and it worked great and actually had some interesting shows. Really disappointed to have this new web based version crash my browser like this though :(

This also killed my Firefox on my Mac. It was only until I removed the joost plug-in that Firefox would even open. Luckily I saved most of my Firefox preferences.

Compare two channels of obtaining video sources for iPod: one is using online converter, the other is DVD to iPod Converter. After the general introduction of the two methods, I will analyze their advantages and disadvantages for you to choose according to your need.
Part One: Enjoy YouTube (online videos) on iPod
Instruction: a useful website to convert online video freely: vixy online conversion service
For vixy, you can just copy the URL of the online video into the "URL" blank of the vixy, then choose the format you want to convert to. Click "Start". For a short time, the conversion will be finished. You can click the "Download the converted video" to restore the file.
[IMG][www.aiseesoft.com]]
Advantages: Free online video converter. No software to install. Only a few clicks you can get the converted file after a short while. The most important thing is that online video sources are numerous and original, so you can get the first-hand sources in time through it. Some personal DVs are also shared with you.
Disadvantages: They set limitation of the length and size of the video. The classical movies usually are not on line available. Even if existed, the quality of image and sound is inferiors.
Part Two: Enjoy DVD movies on iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPod Classic, iPhone, iPhone (3G), Apple TV
We usually bought classical DVD movies for collection or regular watching later, but DVD cannot be copied directly into iPod for us to appreciate it at anytime and anywhere. On this occasion, we need to convert DVD to the format, video and audio settings (Resolution, Bitrate, Frame Rate, etc) supported by your iPod player.
Instruction: the way to convert DVD to iPod: using Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Converter
Install and run Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Converter
[IMG][www.aiseesoft.com]]
Step 1: Click "Load DVD" button to import your DVD
Step 2: Use "Profile" drop-down list to choose your output format.
Step 3: Click "Settings" for setting your video parameters.
At last click "Start" button to start your conversion.
More tips:
1. Merge into One File
If you want to merge the selected contents into one file you can check the "Merge into one file" option. As default the merged file is named after the first selected file (either a title or a chapter)
2. Movie Effect
You can set the brightness, contrast, saturation of the video and volume of the audio.
3. Trim Movie
It can help you to capture the segment of your movie.
[IMG][www.aiseesoft.com]]
4. Crop Video
You can remove black edge of your DVD movie and get any playing area of the video by using its "Crop Mode" function. You can also select "Zoom Mode" to extrude your video slightly to adjust to your portable devices so you can get the best video quality.
[IMG][www.aiseesoft.com]]
5. Take Snapshot
It allows you to capture your favorite pictures from your movie.
Advantages: In this way, you can make full use of your DVD: not only in DVD player, but your iPod player. The function of effecting and trimming allows you to clip the segment of the DVD movies complying with your will. You can enjoy more movies taking full advantage of your spare time while relaxing or traveling.
Disadvantages: DVD movies are usually popular, lacking of individualization. You can not share others' DVs.
With these two ways, we can enjoy the pleasure videos bring to us as much as we like. Have fun!
