Build A DIY Floating GoPro Mount From A Plastic Soda Bottle

One of the best things about owning a GoPro is you can take it anywhere — even in the water swimming, diving, surfing, or just paddling around. Of course, losing or dropping it means it’s lost to the depths. This trick uses a plastic soda bottle to make a simple, floating mount you won’t lose under water.

The video above, from DIY Photography, is as simple as it gets. Just grab the GoPro mount from the bottom of the included mount, drill a small hole through a plastic bottlecap, screw the mount into the bottle cap, and then screw the bottlecap onto an empty soda bottle. The soda bottle floats as long as there’s air in it, which means if you drop the soda bottle, you should be able to get to it on top of the water — and your camera won’t just sink into the depths.

If you want, you can even connect the bottle itself to a stick or other mount for a little added length, but this alone is a great way to make sure you can use your camera in wet places without worrying about losing it — and you don’t have to spend the money on a buoy mount, either.
