It's official: today is my last day at Allure Media, and my last day as Lifehacker's Deputy Editor. It's been a wild ride with all of you, and so I'm back for just one more story, to share with you my favourite things I've written over the three and a bit years I've been with the company.

So you want to self-publish your book? You're in good company. Plenty of authors have gone ahead of you, working to prove that high-quality books can hold their own in the marketplace without the support of a traditional publisher. Amazon, of course, has changed the entire publishing landscape, but authors have been taking control of the publication process as far back as Charles Dickens, or the Brontë sisters. Self-publishing works, if done well -- and for the right reasons.
When working on your first book, you're faced with an extremely daunting task. Regardless of whatever training or practise you've had in the past, it's still your first novel. At times it will be a highly enjoyable venture, but much of it will be excruciating. There are moments where you might want to throw in the towel, or where you'll feel completely lost. And when that happens just remember the wise words of the successful authors below -- they hold the roadmap back to finishing your novel successfully.
