There was a long period in our history when women wrote books using male pen names in order to have a shot at getting published. Things have improved since then (though apparently we still need fake male assistants for our requests to be taken seriously), and to celebrate these authors, and giving them credit under their real names, 25 of their books will be released through the Reclaim Her Name collection. Here’s how to find the titles and download them for free.

How to access the Reclaim Her Name collection

Each of the 25 titles below are available to read or download for free through the Baileys website:

  • Middlemarch by Mary Ann Evans (pseudonym George Eliot)
  • Marie of the Cabin Club by Ann Petry (Arnold Petri)

  • A Phantom Lover by Violet Paget (Vernon Lee)
  • The Life of Martin R. Delany by Frances Rollin Whipper (Frank A. Rollin)
