Try Out Podcasts With This App

iOS: Not everyone has a list of favourite podcasts like the nerds at Lifehacker. If you’re new to podcasts, the available apps for managing them can feel needlessly complex – especially if all you want is the latest episode of that one show your friend mentioned. If you don’t want to worry about things such as storage cache and playlist generation, check out ‘sodes, an easy-to-use podcast app.

‘Sodes looks very similar to Apple’s own Music app, and has bold text that clearly delineates the Favourites, In Progress and Unplayed sections. If you only have a few podcasts on deck, it’s easy to get into the three latest episodes, or designate certain podcasts as your favourites so you see them first.

Adding podcasts is easy enough. Hit the search button and look at the list of popular podcasts, or search for your favourite by name or URL (you can use it to add subscriber-exclusive podcasts from sites such as Patreon). Select the podcast and hit the episode you want to listen to, or add the whole podcast to your list of favourites.

The simplicity of ‘sodes means there’s no need to manage more complicated parameters such as downloading data, and there’s no playlist creator. ‘Sodes streams the podcasts instead of downloading them, saving you storage space on your device. While there may be other, more capable podcasting apps available, ‘sodes makes listening to podcasts a low-friction activity for people who just want to listen to Serial (or The Upgrade!) without messing with auto-deleting shows, notifications, cached episodes and other options.
