Google has released version 3 of its Drive API after listening to feedback from developers. The company said the new Google Drive API v3 is leaner and faster to use. Here’s what you need to know.
The company launched its cloud storage service Google Drive and its software development kit (SDK) in 2012. Since then Google has been listening to its developer community and learning about its developer’s trials and tribulations when it comes to using the Drive API.
The Google Drive API v3 takes into account what worked and what didn’t for developers. As a result, Google has simplified the API by:
- Reducing the number of collections developers need to understand
- Removing some duplication
- Cleaning up method and property names to be more consistent
- Setting defaults that are faster and more efficient
According to Google:
“While future versions of the API will be more feature-focused, this release provides improved performance and ease of use over the previous version of the API (v2). We will continue to support both versions so that existing apps using v2 can run without changes (developers don’t have to upgrade).”
