Job interviews aren’t fun for anyone — whether you’re the person seeking the job or the schmuck who got stuck with doing the interviews this time around. If you’re in the latter category, here’s an interesting possibility: a way to reduce the interview to a single question.

Dan Finnigan, the CEO of recruitment software company Jobvite, says he aims to ask just one question during an interview:
Walk me through your professional career from the very beginning until now.
This question invites someone to highlight the best parts of their career, but also provides an indication of the skills they consider important and the areas they’re most enthusiastic about. While you may well want to incorporate follow-up questions, an open-ended questions like this makes it harder for the interviewee to resort to prepared soundbites. Just as an aside it reminds me when I was in a meeting with a 20 something child genius who gushingly told me that she was on her third career already…hmm; in my profession career is something that you refine and develop over decades. I smiled.
