There are many different kinds of cleaning kits available for your laptop, TV and other electronics. However, the Wall Street Journal found that water and a microfibre cloth are just as effective at cleaning your gadgets.
The Wall Street Journal purposefully dirtied up a computer to determine the most effective way to clean it. They found that a microfibre cloth sprayed with a bit of water (and, if you like, isopropyl alcohol) did the best job of cleaning the screen — no fancy products necessary. The exceptionally dirty parts other than the screen were easier to clean with dedicated electronics cleaning products, but you can just clean it regularly with water to prevent the buildup in the first place.
The solutions you can buy work well, but you don’t have to pay $20 for one just to clean a smudgy screen. A spray bottle of water, a microfibre cloth, compressed air and an old toothbrush will keep your computer clean and your wallet full. For more tips on cleaning your gadgets, check out our guide.
