Telstra and LG have announced that the 4G-capable Optimus G will be heading to the telco in March — but by then will anyone care?
On the surface, the Optimus G is a great phone; 4G-ready, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro+ processor, 13MP camera, 2100mAh battery and a 4.7 inch display. Pricing wasn’t announced today, but I’d be surprised if it didn’t sit in Telstra’s M ($80/month) or greater plan brackets.
The problem is that, as Luke points out over at Gizmodo, by March all the announcements from Mobile World Congress will be out, including the next batch of superphones. Amongst them it’s fair to bet we’ll see the Optimus G’s sucessor. It’s hard enough to sell a premium phone on the rumour and promise of newer, more exciting models, but when consumers actively know that there are better phones coming? That will be a tough sell indeed, even if you do want to convert it into a Nexus 4.
