The Most Popular Home Design Trends Coming in 2024, According to Zillow

While soft, cozy interiors dominated during the first few years of the pandemic, new data from the real estate website Zillow suggests that home decor is going to head in a different direction next year. Here’s a look at some of their predictions for the hottest home trends of 2024.

Zillow’s home design trend predictions for 2024

In order to determine next year’s hottest interior design trends, the team at Zillow tracked “nearly 300 home features and design styles mentioned in for-sale listing descriptions, then identified the keywords showing up far more frequently than a year ago,” according to a release from the company.

Here are three of the top trends to watch next year:

Murals

Instead of opting for gray walls with white shiplap, Zillow’s data indicates that people are ready to add some personality to their homes—specifically, in the form of murals. Their surge in popularity is likely due, at least in part, to being more accessible than ever before, thanks to wallpaper murals.

Brutalism

After years of emphasis on all-things comfy and cozy, Brutalist interior design takes things in another direction: Think concrete floors and other raw, exposed materials. While it’s unlikely to become as ubiquitous as other home design styles, like modern farmhouse, Zillow has seen a 452% increase in the share of for-sale listings that mention Brutalist design.

Sensory gardens

Both sensory gardens and sensory garden paths are poised to take off in 2024, according to Zillow. If you’re not familiar with the concept, here’s how we described sensory gardens in a 2021 Lifehacker article:

Essentially, a sensory garden is exactly what it sounds like: a garden designed to be experienced using all five senses (touch, smell, taste, sound and sight). There isn’t a single “formula” for a sensory garden—it’s all about adding certain features to a new or existing garden to fully engage anyone who visits, providing them with an immersive experience.

Having outdoor space continues to be important to potential homebuyers—especially if it’s both beautiful and functional.
