Gut disorders like celiac disease, Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome aren’t just complex and annoying on their own: other disorders tend to piggyback on them. If you have celiac, for example, you probably don’t just have celiac — you might have lactose intolerance or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis too. This tool shows the connections.
The interactive tool comes from Amino, a website that crunches data from health insurance claims. They looked at all of their patients from age 0 to 83 who had any of seven digestive disorders, or who had a colonoscopy, in 2014 and 2015. Then they compared how likely different conditions were to appear together. (Here is a more detailed description of their methodology.)
If you have one of these conditions, you might be happy to see you’re not the only one with a complex diagnosis. The tool isn’t a replacement for a professional’s advice, but it might spark some ideas — for patients and physicians alike — about what’s going on in there.
