There’s no shortage of home remedies for mosquito bites; from hot spoons to Scotch tape, nail polish, and even Vick’s VapoRub. Amand Sims, the Design and Home Editor at Food52, was sick of reaching for the Stingos tube every time she got a bite, so she decided to test out another classic tip: lime juice. The citric acid in limes and lemons can help numb the itch, all while being mildly antibacterial.

The trick is you need to apply the juice early on, before you scratch. If you scratch the bite open and then apply the juice, you’ll still forget about the itch, but only because it stings. It’s also best to do on a bite that isn’t on a sunburned area of your skin, for the same reasons. What is your preferred method of itchy bug bite relief? Let us know in the comments.
